It takes tens of thousands of highly skilled people to keep the plastics industry thriving. Essential to any team working for a company within the plastics industry are those studying federal and state regulations, seeing that the organization consistently complies with various rules that have been put in place.
Deveney Young does that for Teknor Apex in her role as a Regulatory Specialist. “Teknor Apex is a trusted global provider of custom polymer solutions,” she said. “I ensure that we’re compliant with all applicable regulations and standards in a wide range of industries including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and consumer products.”
Building a career and a network
After graduating with a degree in Biology, Deveney began her regulatory career with a chemical company, later finding herself intrigued by the possibilities of the plastics industry, where she has found a very satisfying professional home. “I really love working in the plastic industry because of the amazing people,” she said. “Everyone has been so professional and knowledgeable, and I learn something new every time I get the chance to network. Building a strong support system within the industry has been incredibly meaningful to me, especially being new to the field.”
Part of building that support system has been Deveney’s participation in FLiP (Future Leaders in Plastics), the Plastics Industry Association’s professional development initiative for industry professionals under the age of 40. “I’ve been part of FLiP for about two years,” she shared. “I have had amazing opportunities connecting with other FLiP members on Zoom meetings and at events.”
Asked what she has found most helpful about FLiP, Deveney answered, “The FLiP Mentorship Program has been instrumental in shaping my career, providing the opportunity to acquire additional insights into the industry from an external viewpoint, specifically from an individual outside of my own organization.” About her mentor—Monica Filyaw of PolyQuest—Deveney added, “Monica’s expertise in the field has significantly enhanced my understanding and enabled me to make informed decisions on what is best for my career path.”
Promoting opportunities in the plastics industry
Deveney is quick to recommend the plastics industry to anyone seeking rewarding work. Working within our industry helps provide essential support to people’s lives while benefiting the environment by contributing to the development of sustainable solutions for plastic materials.
“This industry can offer a diverse range of positions spanning from engineering to sales and marketing,” she pointed out, “and the rising demand for plastic products indicates significant growth potential and job stability.” Speaking to members of her own generation, she added, “Recent graduates should be encouraged to explore career opportunities within plastics, and companies that start investing in the next generation will see many benefits in the future.”
In addition to shaping her as a professional, Deveney has seen the industry affect her personal life, as well. “It’s definitely interesting how my career in plastics has influenced my life outside of work, especially when it comes to recycling,” she said. “I’ve become more conscious about plastic recycling and always check the recycling codes to ensure my facility accepts it.”
Deveney especially enjoys sharing her plastics education with others. “Changing people’s perceptions of plastic materials is one of our major challenges,” she observed. “I am thankful for the chance to educate others on the benefits of plastic and its role in modern society.”
